Our goal as responsible community members and citizens of these great United States is to donate 10% of our proceeds to charity, primarily the Responsibility Foundation, to further the cause to build a Statue of Responsibility on the west coast.
The original idea of a "Statue of Responsibility" was the vision of Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor who went on to publish the best-seller "Man's Search for Meaning," which today is considered to be among the top 10 most influential books on the planet. In this work published in 1946, he expresses his dream in the quote below:
Freedom, however, is not the last word. Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth. Freedom is but the negative aspect of the whole phenomenon whose positive aspect is responsibleness. In fact, freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.Viktor Frankl
In the 1990's Dr. Frankl and a small group of individuals got together to discuss how to make this dream a reality. This group included Dr. James Newman and Dr. Stephen R. Covey.
In 1997, Gary Lee Price was commissioned to design the Statue of Responsibility. In 2004, an entourage of approximately 12 people flew to Vienna, Austria to meet with Elly Frankl (Viktor's widow), among them was the commissioned sculptor, Gary Lee Price. The purpose of this trip was to obtain her blessing on the prototype that Gary had completed.
When Gary unveiled his sculpture that depicts two hands clasped together, Elly could not contain her emotion. She invited Gary into Viktor's' private study there in the flat where Viktor had spent his entire life. Located in a small niche' amongst his thousands of books was a woodcarving of a man reaching upward with his hands outstretched toward heaven.
Elly proceeded to tell Gary that this piece of sculpture was cherished deeply by Viktor. He had discovered it shortly after his release from the concentration camps. Viktor had to place it on lay-away as he had no money at the time. She continued by telling him that Viktor often used it as a metaphor for responsibility, asking the question… "Where is the hand reaching back?" She then replied to Gary, "And here you bring me a statue that answers that question…"
That was the moment that Gary knew he had to complete this project. As the team returned home, there was much excitement and support shown as many hours of planning and research were done. However, during the following years this project remained somewhat underground, just waiting for the right time to for circumstances to align and for this country to be ready to embrace it. That time has arrived.
